Description:

There are few places better to enjoy a day of bird watching than in the lush oasis of Fayoum, located 95 kilometers from Cairo.

Enjoy a scenic ride through the Egyptian desert to the city of Fayoum, and begin your tour with a visit to the ruins of Karanis. Stroll through the ancient city and admire its many monuments, dating back to Roman era, as well as those of the Copts and Early Islam. Continue on with a visit to the Water Wheels, said to be running since the Ptolemaic era, and then head over to the beautiful Lake Qaroun to begin your bird watching.

Lake Qaroun is considered one of the oldest natural lakes in the world, and is the third largest lake in Egypt, making it a perfect spot to observe the colorful variety of birds that make the oasis their home. Enjoy lunch at a quality local restaurant, and then continue on to the temples and remnants of the Graeco Roman City of Dionysius at Qasr Qarun. End the day with a visit to Wadi El Rayan, a natural depression located 42 meters below sea level in the Western Desert, and designated a Protected Area in 1989.
